Slab Door Only
A slab door does not have handle preparation, deadbolt preparation, frame and hinges. These doors can be used as interior or exterior doors. They are less expensive. Slab doors are perfect if you are remodeling a residential home where existing door frame are in good condition and people who are trying to stay on a low budget. They are more challenging to install.
A slab door installation requires more attention and experience. The slab door has to be the same configuration (hinges, screw holes and etc..) and size as the door you are removing. If your existing door frame is very old or damaged, a slab door might not be the appropriate choice.
Pre-hung Doors
A pre-hung door is already assembled with its own frame. Pre-hung door includes handle preparation, wood jambs, door casing, hinges, door sill, weather stripping and wood frame. The following come already prepare, handle is pre- drilled, and Q-lon in bronze weather stripping. Door sill can also be solid oak, aluminum bronze, and zinc. Hinges can be oil rubber bronze or satin nickel. Doors with 80" x 1-3/4" and 96" x 1-3/8" thick doors are hung on 3 hinges. While 96" doors are hung on 4 hinges. Mahogany jambs size range 4-9/16", 5-1/4", 6 -5/8" and custom options.
There are several reasons to choose a pre-hung door for example, if you are building or remodeling a apartment, business, building, or residential home pre-hung doors are definitely the best choice due to rough opening and installation. Do not have existing door frame or if current door frame is damaged and cannot be replace by a slab door then pre-hung doors is the must go.
Pre-hung doors are very heavy and hard to manage and move around. Additional help will be required. If a pre-hung door is not installed properly, there will be difficulty closing and door swing might be damage.
Pre-hung doors include additional work such as trim installation, handle painting, drywall and more details.
